For centuries,
this little fishing port was a haven for daring whalers who braved
the ocean and hunted their prey all the way to Newfoundland. This
maritime tradition still endures today, and is apparent in the
picturesque fishing port - the only one along the entire Landes
coast - and the fishermen's market, held regularly on its quaysides.
Down at the harbour, hundreds of pleasure boats are anchored -
a fine sight to behold, and a distinctive sound too, with their
shrouds flapping in the breeze.
Capbreton is
a town rich in history, and not surprisingly, has turned to tourism
and established itself as a pleasant and friendly seaside resort
popular with families. There is plenty to do on the beach, and
all kinds of nature-related activities, which have gradually developed
here, focusing on the forest and the sea. In summer and winter
alike, there is plenty of activity in the town centre's shops
and restaurants, and on the seafront, below its casino.
